In late 1989 Mazda introduced the redesigned Familia / Protege for North America. Featuring a larger and more powerful 1.8L DOHC motor for the higher end packages and a smaller 1.6L SOHC motor for the hatchback (323) models. In Japan the Familia also came in 4WD with a much more powerful 1.8L DOHC Turbo motor. In North America there was also a small number of 4WD sedans released using a 1.8L SOHC engine.

Elsewhere in the world the turbo GT-X and GT-R could be had with 4WD and upwards of 180-220hp in stock trim. CorkSport loves the BG chassis Protege / Familia / 323 platform and it is one of our most popular lines.
