For the 1999 model year Mazda released the newly updated NB chassis Miata. Styling changes included sleeker more aerodynamic lines, and fixed headlights in place of the pop-up lights on the original Miata due to changes to pedestrian safety laws. In this generation the 1.8L BP engine was also tuned to add variable valve timing on the intake cam which increased power to 130hp. Still an amazingly popular car, the Miata showed no signs of slowing down.
